Acupuncture is used within physiotherapy, in the management of pain and inflammation. It is a means of reducing pain via the stimulation of the brain and spinal cord to produce natural pain relieving chemicals and hormones. These chemicals can also promote sleep and well being, and assist the body’s healing process. This further benefits your personalised physiotherapy treatment as with less pain you able to participate in the rest of your treatment plan.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. Your Physiotherapist will determine the locations of the Acupuncture points, based upon your initial assessment and the cause of your symptoms. Once the needles are inserted they are then manipulated in order to achieve the desired response.

Trigger point Acupuncture may also be used to facilitate relaxation in specific muscles following trauma such as whiplash injury, or for longer term unresolving muscle pain such as repetitive strain injury (RSI). It can also be a means to obtain increased muscle length in order to aid stretch and rehabilitation with sporting injuries. Here the needle is placed into the affected muscle until it is felt to relax under the needle and then removed. This is combined with your individual treatment plan to ensure that the result remains longer lasting.
